Research Operations Nexus (RON) Meetup – Honoring the Legacy of Ronald W. Przybylinski

NWA RON Meetup Sponsored by the AMS to be held at the 98th American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting

By Greg Stumpf

As an operational meteorologist, have you ever thought, “I have this really great idea to improve weather forecasting and decision support, but I need someone to help with its science, research and/or development?” As a research meteorologist, have you ever thought, “I have this really great idea to improve weather forecasting and decision support, but I need to make sure it is meaningful and useful to operational forecasters?” You have? Then we have an opportunity for you.

Ron Przybylinski, the former Science and Operations Officer (SOO) of the National Weather Service Forecast Office in St. Louis, Missouri, left us the legacy of his unending motivation to interconnect weather operations and research in strong and enduring ways. Ron was a master in the transition zone, or nexus, of operations and research. He would often ask the above questions of his research colleagues. And the research interactions with Ron led to large field projects that provided great benefit both to operations and the general knowledge.

Three RON Meetups have taken place at the National Weather Association (NWA) Annual Meetings since 2015. For the first time, a RON Meetup will take place at the 2018 American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas. The RON provides the opportunity for an interactive “meetup” between research and operational meteorologists. The groups will rotate through a number of stations in speed-mentoring fashion and discuss a variety of ideas and themes that could benefit forecast and warning operations. The goal is simple: to build and develop new relationships in the nexus!

The NWA RON Meetup Sponsored by the AMS, will take place during the 98th AMS Annual Meeting on Monday, January 8, 2018, 4:15 to 6:00 pm in Ballroom A at the Austin Convention Center. There is no additional cost to attend, but you must be registered for the AMS Annual Meeting. Because this is a special event, a separate RON Meetup registration form, independent of AMS registration is at http://tinyurl.com/ron2018ams. Seating is limited to the first 100 registrants. Light snacks and beverages will be served. For more information, please contact co-facilitator Greg Stumpf (greg.stumpf@noaa.gov).
