Editorial Board Roles & Responsibilities

The following roles are in effect as of January 17, 2022: Chief Editor: The Chief Editor is responsible for the scientific quality of the JOM, the operation of the JOM editorial process, and overseeing the Editorial Board. The Chief Editor receives all JOM submissions and determines if submissions are appropriate and meet the minimum standards of the JOM. They assign submitted manuscripts to members of the Editorial Board to manage manuscripts as they move through the peer-review process. The Chief Editor mentors the Associate Chief Editor and Editors by assisting them with keeping manuscripts moving through the review process. If the Chief Editor has a conflict of interest with a submitted manuscript or needs to take a leave of absence due to personal or professional reasons, including extended vacation leave, the Associate Chief Editor will oversee the manuscript with an Editor of the Editorial Board. Term: Typically 2 years. Associate Chief Editor: The Associate Chief Editor is responsible for assisting the Chief Editor with determining if JOM submissions are appropriate and meet the minimum standards of the JOM. If the Chief Editor has a conflict of interest with a submitted manuscript or needs to take a leave of absence, the Associate Chief Editor will oversee the manuscript through the peer-review process. The Associate Chief Editor will onboard new JOM Editors and mentor them through the management of their first manuscripts. An Associate Chief Editor may be considered for Chief Editor after one year. Term: Typically 1-2 years, followed by a 2-year term as Chief Editor. Editor: JOM Editors handle the peer-review process for JOM manuscripts assigned to them by the Chief Editor or Associate Chief Editor. For manuscripts they are assigned a complete evaluation of each submission prior to initiating the peer-review process as described in the JOM Call for Papers. Editors referee papers that enter the peer-review process and make decisions on submitted manuscripts. JOM Editors may need to provide comments or full reviews for manuscripts they are managing. If a JOM Editor has a conflict of interest with a submitted manuscript, they will notify the Chief Editor and excuse themselves from managing the manuscript. A JOM Editor may be considered for Associate Chief Editor after being a member of the Editorial Board for at least two years. Term: Typically 3 years with the option for a 3 year extension.

Content Registration and Reference Linking

The Journal of Operational Meteorology uses Crossref to register our content by depositing metadata for each article. This also allows us to make one-click connections to the registered references in our JOM papers.

JOM Archival

The Journal of Operational Meteorology is contained in the LOCKSS and Portico archives. LOCKSS system has permission to collect, preserve, and serve this Archival Unit. LOCKSS is an open-source, library-led digital preservation system built on the principle that "lots of copies keep stuff safe." Portico is among the largest community-supported digital archives in the world, preserving e-journals, e-books, and other electronic scholarly content to ensure researchers and students will have access to it in the future. Libraries that subscribe to the JOM may obtain access via IP authentication. Contact the NWA Publications Committee Chair for more information (pubchair@nwas.org). The Journal of Operational Meteorology also can be found on EBSCOhost databases.
