The Use of Several Unique Remote Sensing Tools and Techniques in Forecasts Made For the Central Tennessee Valley.

The staff at the NWS Warning and Forecast Office in Huntsville, Alabama (WFO HUN), in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Huntsville and NASA, has access to several unique remote sensing tools and techniques that have proven to be extremely effective in identifying various weather phenomena, especially prior to and during significant weather events. The Short-term Prediction Research and Transition program applies NASA measurement systems and earth science research to improve the accuracy of short-term weather analysis and prediction at the regional and local scales. These research and development efforts, such as use of the high resolution imagery from the polar orbiting Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument and new GOES aviation products, are tested within AWIPS at WFO HUN prior to national implementation.

The North Alabama Lightning Mapping Array is a principal component of a severe weather test bed to infuse new science and technology into the short-term forecasting of severe and hazardous weather. Lighting data from the array, used in association with WSR-88D imagery and data from the National Lightning Detection Network enable better diagnosis of evolving convection that has improved the prediction of severe thunderstorms. The university s Advanced Radar for Meteorological and Operational Research is used by the staff a WFO HUN for supplemental radar information during the warning decision making process. This radar system is a WSR-74C radar that has been upgraded with dual-polarization that can more accurately estimate rainfall rates and hail size. The university s Mobile Integrated Profiling System provides real-time wind, sky cover, temperature, and humidity data. The interactions with the university and NASA gives WFO HUN a unique capability to apply these remote sensing tools and techniques to increase situational awareness and proactive decision making, particularly during significant weather events.
